What is an aviator frame?
An aviator frame is a large, teardrop-shaped lens set into a thin metal frame, usually with a double or triple bridge and lenses that narrow toward the bottom rather than sitting evenly balanced like a circle or square. It was designed in the 1930s for military pilots, whose eyes needed covering from brow to cheekbone against high-altitude glare, not for anyone sitting at a desk.
Why does the aviator have that teardrop shape?
The shape follows the eye socket rather than a geometric grid. It’s worth comparing the aviator against other established shapes before settling on it. A round frame softens angles in a completely different way, a cat-eye frame lifts the outer corner instead of tapering it, and a browline frame puts the visual weight at the top rather than distributing it across the whole lens. What should you look for in an aviator frame’s construction?
The details that separate a well-made aviator from a flimsy one are mostly about the metal and the joints, not the tint:
- Bridge weight. A double bridge should feel structurally solid, not like a thin wire that will bend with regular handling.
- Temple hinges. Look for a clean, tight hinge — metal frames in this shape rely on the hinge more than acetate frames do, since there’s no thick material to absorb stress.
- Nose pads. Because aviators sit on adjustable pads rather than a moulded bridge, the pads themselves should be easy to adjust and unlikely to leave marks or slip.

A dark lens without a stated UV rating is worse than no sunglasses at all, because the tint causes the pupil to open wider while letting UV through anyway. Contemporary aviators run in a wider range of proportions than the original military spec, from oversized fashion versions to smaller, closer-fitting takes designed for narrower faces.
