Eyewear, explained
A wrap frame is a frame whose front and lenses curve around the side of the face rather than sitting flat, so the edge of the lens meets the temple almost without a break. It exists to close the gap that a flat frame leaves at the sides — the space where wind, glare and … Read more
A frame looks expensive when its proportions are considered, its material is dense and evenly finished, and its details — hinges, bridge, temple tips — are built rather than glued on as an afterthought. Price and appearance often correlate, but not reliably. Plenty of cheap frames borrow the visual cues of expensive ones, and plenty … Read more
A bold frame stops working the moment it stops being the thing you notice second. If the frame is the first and only thing anyone registers — before the face, before the outfit, before the context of the room — it has tipped from statement into distraction. That tipping point is about proportion, colour and … Read more
What is the difference between a men’s and a women’s frame, really? Mostly, it’s sizing convention, colour range and hardware detailing — not anatomy. Frames labelled “men’s” tend to run larger and heavier in materials; “women’s” tend to run smaller with more decorative bridges and colour options. Face shape, not gender, is what actually determines … Read more
Clear and translucent frames look different on everyone because the frame stops supplying its own colour and starts borrowing it — from skin tone, hair colour, eye colour, the light in the room, even a shirt underneath. A solid black frame overrides all of that. A clear one doesn’t, which is exactly why it never … Read more
Frame colour changes contrast — how much the glasses separate from the skin and stand out on the face — and it changes how loud or quiet a shape reads. A black square frame and a caramel-tortoiseshell version of the same shape can look like two different pieces of eyewear, even though the outline hasn’t … Read more
A double bridge is a second bar running across the top of the nose piece, sitting just above the main bridge and usually visible as a thin strip of metal or acetate between the lenses. It began as a structural fix for early metal frames, but on most modern glasses it’s there for proportion and … Read more
A saddle bridge is a wide, curved section of the frame that sits directly across the top of the nose, spreading the frame’s weight over a broader area instead of resting on two small pads. It solves the discomfort and slipping that come from a narrow bridge concentrating weight on two tiny points of skin. … Read more
A keyhole bridge is the double-arched shape cut into the top centre of a frame, where the two lenses meet — named because, seen from the front, the gap looks like an old-fashioned keyhole. Some faces need that extra width and lift at the bridge for a frame to actually sit level; the shape gives … Read more
What are geometric frames, and who suits them? Geometric frames are glasses built from deliberate, often angular shapes — hexagons, octagons, trapezoids, sharp-cornered rectangles — rather than the softened curves most eyewear defaults to. They suit people who want their glasses to read as a design choice first, and who are comfortable with a frame … Read more
