UV protection blocks ultraviolet radiation from reaching the eye and is a health measure. Polarisation filters out horizontal glare — the harsh reflected light bouncing off water, glass, wet tarmac or a car bonnet — and is a comfort and clarity measure. A lens can have either, both, or neither, and a dark tint on its own guarantees neither.
These two things get conflated constantly, partly because they usually turn up in the same sentence on a hangtag, and partly because both are associated with “good” sunglasses. But they solve entirely different problems, and a pair can excel at one while doing nothing for the other.
What does UV protection actually do?
UV protection is a filter built into the lens material that stops ultraviolet A and B radiation from passing through to the eye. It has nothing to do with how the lens looks — a completely clear lens can carry full UV protection, and a near-black lens can carry none at all.
This is the one that matters medically, and it’s the one worth being uncompromising about. Look for a lens marked UV400, or labelled 100% UVA/UVB protection — both describe the same thing, a filter that blocks effectively the full range of ultraviolet light. What a UV400 rating actually means is worth understanding properly before buying, because the number is doing real work, not just sounding technical.
What does polarisation actually do?
Polarised lenses contain a filter that blocks horizontally oriented light waves — the kind produced when light reflects off a flat, shiny surface. The result is less glare, better contrast, and a reduction in that squinting, slightly washed-out feeling when driving into low sun or standing near water.
It’s a filter for a specific kind of light behaviour, not for brightness generally. Polarisation doesn’t make the world darker; it makes reflected glare disappear, which is why the effect is far more noticeable on a boat, a wet road or a ski slope than in an ordinary shaded street.

Can a lens have one without the other?
Yes, and this is the part most people get wrong. A lens can be polarised with no meaningful UV filter, and a lens can carry full UV protection with no polarisation at all. Neither one implies the other.
- UV protection without polarisation — common, effective for eye health, no glare reduction.
- Polarisation without adequate UV protection — the more concerning combination, because a polarised tint often reads as “serious” sunglasses when the actual UV filter may be missing or minimal.
- Both together — the standard combination in most decent sunglasses, though not automatic just because a lens looks dark or expensive.
This is exactly why a dark lens without a stated UV rating is worse than wearing no sunglasses at all. Darkness makes the pupil open wider, as it would in any low-light situation, and a wider pupil without a UV filter behind it lets in more ultraviolet radiation than the eye would receive unprotected in daylight. Tint and protection are not the same claim, and a lens has to state its UV credentials rather than imply them through colour.
How do you know if sunglasses are UV protected?
The lens or a permanent label should state UV400, or 100% UVA/UVB protection, in writing. This is not something to infer from tint depth, lens colour, or price — none of those correlate reliably with the actual filter inside the lens.
If a pair has no visible UV information at the point of sale — no sticker, no printed spec, no note in the description — that’s reason enough to ask before buying, particularly for anything bought as a fashion piece from a general clothing retailer rather than a specialist. Genuine UV400 protection is inexpensive to build into a lens, so its absence is a labelling gap worth questioning rather than a cost saving worth accepting.
How do you know if sunglasses are polarised?
A quick, reliable check is to look at a reflective surface — a phone screen, a car windscreen, a shop window — through the lens and rotate the glasses roughly 60 degrees. If the glare visibly dims and then returns as you rotate, the lens is polarised. A non-polarised lens shows no change.
Retailers also usually state polarisation plainly, since it’s a feature worth marketing on its own. If it isn’t mentioned anywhere, the lens almost certainly isn’t polarised — manufacturers rarely bury a genuine selling point.
Does polarisation change how a lens looks or reads on the face?
Not dramatically, though there are small differences. Polarised lenses tend to sit in a narrower band of tint colours — greys, browns, greens — because the filter itself has optical requirements that limit how it can be dyed. This is largely why heavily fashion-driven colours like pale pink, yellow or mirrored pastel tints are less commonly polarised.
From the outside, a polarised lens and a non-polarised lens in the same colour are close to indistinguishable to another person. The difference is entirely in how the world looks to the wearer, not in how the sunglasses read to everyone else. If the frame itself is doing the aesthetic work — the proportion, the bridge, the material — polarisation is a lens decision layered on top, not something that changes the silhouette. Aviator frames and wayfarer frames both carry polarised versions comfortably, precisely because their identity comes from shape rather than lens finish.
Which one matters more when choosing sunglasses?
UV protection is non-negotiable; polarisation is a preference. Every pair of sunglasses worn outdoors should carry a stated UV filter, full stop. Polarisation is worth paying attention to if the wearer spends real time driving, near water, or on snow — situations where reflected glare is a genuine daily annoyance rather than an occasional one.
For someone who mostly wears sunglasses around a city, walking or on a terrace, polarisation is a nice-to-have rather than a necessity. The UV filter, on the other hand, is doing the same job regardless of lifestyle, which is why it deserves the higher bar.
Is blue-light filtering related to either of these?
Not really, and it’s worth being clear about that distinction too. Blue-light filtering is usually marketed for screen use rather than sun exposure, and the evidence that it meaningfully reduces eye strain or protects vision is thin — the marketing has moved well ahead of what’s actually been established. It isn’t the same mechanism as UV filtering, and it isn’t a substitute for it outdoors.
If eye strain from screens is a genuine day-to-day issue, that’s a conversation worth having with an optician, who can look at the actual cause rather than assume a coating will resolve it.
What should the lens decision actually depend on?
Once UV protection is confirmed as standard, the rest becomes a matter of use and taste. Tint colour affects colour perception and contrast slightly; polarisation affects glare; mirrored coatings affect how much light passes through and how the lens reads visually from the front. None of these substitute for the UV filter, and none of them should be assessed by eye alone.
The frame itself is where most of the visual character sits — proportion, bridge detail, material finish — and it’s worth giving that the same scrutiny as the lens. What makes a frame look expensive has little to do with lens technology and everything to do with construction and proportion, which is a separate but equally important part of choosing well.
