Does it matter which fabric is used?
Yes, and it’s worth being specific rather than treating all cloth as equal.
- Tightly woven cotton (most shirts) traps grit against the weave and drags it as you wipe.
- Denim and synthetic blends tend to be worse — coarser weave, more static, more residue.
- Paper products — tissues, paper towels — contain wood fibres that are abrasive at a microscopic level, even when they feel soft to the touch.

Does this damage show up straight away?
No, which is part of why the habit persists. A single wipe with a shirt rarely produces a visible mark. The damage is cumulative — fine hairline abrasions building up over weeks and months until, under a certain angle of light or against a bright screen, the lens takes on a soft haze that no cleaning fixes.

Does a scratch-resistant coating make this less of a risk?
It reduces the risk without removing it. Does an anti-reflective or oleophobic coating make things worse?
These coatings don’t cause the damage, but they’re often the first layer to show it, because they sit on top and are thinner still. Is this only a coating problem, or does the frame matter too?

- Store the glasses in a case rather than lens-down on a surface, and rather than folded into a shirt pocket.

Does this apply to sunglasses too?
Yes, and arguably more so, since sunglasses spend more time in bags, on car dashboards and in pockets where grit collects. The same rinse-first approach applies regardless of tint or lens colour.
