What should never touch an AR-coated lens?

Most damage to a coating happens not from wear but from the wrong cleaning product reaching for a quick fix. The list of things to avoid is short and worth memorising:

  • Household glass cleaner, which typically contains ammonia and will attack the coating over repeated use.
  • Alcohol-based wipes, hand sanitiser, or anything with a solvent smell.
  • Paper towel, tissue, or napkins — all abrasive at a microscopic level, however soft they feel.
  • Saliva, which is a common instinctive fix and does nothing except spread the smudge with added bacteria.
  • Any dry wipe on a lens that has not been rinsed first, because grit trapped under the cloth is what actually causes fine scratching.

Why does a shirt or tissue make it worse?

A shirt hem feels soft against skin, but under magnification cotton fibres are coarse and uneven compared with the microfibre made for lenses. Dragging that fabric across a dry lens grinds any dust or grit already sitting on the surface into the coating, leaving fine scratches that scatter light rather than reflect it cleanly. What if the smudge won’t come off?

If a mark survives a proper wash-and-dry, it is worth checking whether it is actually residue or early coating damage. Coating that has begun to break down can look permanently smeared or show a faint rainbow sheen under certain light — a texture rather than a film. No amount of cleaning will remove that, because the coating itself has failed, not the surface grime sitting on it.

  • Store glasses in a case rather than lens-down on a table or tossed into a bag.
  • Avoid steam, hot water, or leaving glasses on a car dashboard, since heat can affect coating adhesion over time.
