Glare is light that arrives at the eye in a disorganised, overwhelming way — too much of it at once, or reflected off a surface at an angle that scatters it straight into your line of sight. It makes it hard to see detail, and it’s uncomfortable. Sunglasses help in two separate ways: reducing overall brightness, and, if the lenses are polarised, cutting the specific reflected glare that bounces off flat, shiny surfaces.
Those two jobs are not the same thing, and conflating them is where most sunglasses marketing gets sloppy. A dark lens dims everything evenly. A polarised lens targets one particular type of light. Knowing which kind of glare you’re actually dealing with — day to day, on the road, near water — determines which feature actually matters.
What is glare, exactly?
Glare happens when the range of brightness in your field of view is too wide for your eyes to comfortably adjust to, or when a bright light source reflects directly at you off a surface. It’s not one thing — it’s a family of related problems with different fixes.
Broadly, there are two useful categories:
- Discomfort glare — general overbrightness, like a low winter sun or a pale, sunlit street, that makes squinting unavoidable but doesn’t necessarily involve reflection.
- Reflected glare — light bouncing off a flat horizontal or near-horizontal surface (water, wet tarmac, a car bonnet, snow) that arrives as a concentrated, polarised beam.
Ordinary tinted lenses reduce the first. Only polarised lenses meaningfully address the second.
What causes glare in everyday life?
Most of the glare people complain about comes from a small set of repeat offenders, and recognising which one you’re actually fighting is more useful than buying a lens on spec alone.
- Direct low sun — driving into a sunset, or a bright morning commute facing east.
- Reflections off water — lakes, the sea, wet pavements after rain.
- Light bouncing off pale or glossy surfaces — sand, snow, concrete, a car windscreen.
- Screen and shop-window reflections in bright ambient light.
Some of these are pure brightness problems. Others — water, wet roads, glossy paint — are reflection problems, which is the category polarised lenses were designed for.
Does any dark lens cut glare?
A dark lens reduces overall brightness, which does ease discomfort glare, but darkness alone tells you nothing about how much UV is getting through. A very dark lens with no stated UV filter is worse than wearing no sunglasses at all, because the tint makes the pupil open wider, letting in more UV rather than less.
Protection comes from the UV filter, not the tint. Look for a stated UV400 rating or “100% UVA/UVB protection” on the lens or packaging — that’s the part doing the actual protective work. What a UV400 rating actually means is worth understanding properly rather than assuming from how dark a lens looks. This point is worth repeating because it runs against instinct: darker does not mean safer, and price doesn’t guarantee it either — a dark lens without UV protection is genuinely worse than none.
What’s the difference between glare and UV light?
Glare is about visible brightness and comfort. UV is invisible radiation that the eye doesn’t register as light at all, and the two require separate solutions on the same pair of glasses.
A lens can dim glare very effectively while offering no UV protection, and a lens can filter UV completely while doing very little to reduce glare — a clear, UV-treated indoor lens is the obvious example. Sunglasses need both jobs done properly: a tint or lens category suited to the brightness of the conditions, and a genuine UV filter underneath it. UV protection and polarisation are frequently confused, and they solve different problems entirely.
Which kind of glare do polarised lenses actually fix?
Polarised lenses are built to block reflected glare specifically — the kind that bounces off horizontal surfaces like water, wet roads, snow or a car bonnet, arriving at the eye as a strong, directional beam. A polarising filter is aligned to cut that particular orientation of light while letting ordinary light through largely unaffected.
That’s why polarised lenses are so often recommended for driving, boating, and general outdoor glare near water or pale ground — what polarised lenses actually do is a narrower, more specific job than most buyers assume, and it isn’t the same thing as a strong UV filter or a dark tint.

What polarisation doesn’t do is reduce overall brightness on its own, and it doesn’t add UV protection — that still has to be a separate, stated feature of the lens. It also has known limitations. Polarised lenses can make some LCD screens and dashboard displays harder to read, because the filter interacts with how those screens emit light, which is one reason what makes sunglasses suitable for driving involves more than just adding polarisation and calling it done.
Can polarised lenses be the wrong choice?
Yes — there are specific situations where polarisation actively works against you, and it’s worth knowing them before assuming every pair of sunglasses should have it. Certain screens, some anti-ice cockpit displays, and a handful of sports where spotting glare-off-ice or glare-off-snow patches is actually useful information can all be compromised by a polarising filter.
There are real cases where polarised lenses are a bad idea, and treating polarisation as a universal upgrade misses the point of what it’s actually for. It’s a targeted fix for reflected glare, not a general-purpose brightness feature, and matching it to the right activity matters more than defaulting to it every time.
Should glare ever be treated as a warning sign?
Ordinary glare discomfort — squinting in bright sun, struggling with a low winter sun through a windscreen — is common and not a medical concern. But certain visual disturbances are different and shouldn’t be worked around with a lens choice at all.
A sudden change in vision, eye pain, new floaters, flashes of light, halos appearing around lights that weren’t there before, or any loss of vision in one eye are same-day matters for an eye care professional, not something to address with a tint or a lens upgrade. If glare has recently started behaving strangely rather than simply being bright-day discomfort, that distinction matters, and it’s worth seeing someone qualified rather than reading further into sunglasses features.
How should glare shape which sunglasses you actually choose?
Start with what kind of glare shows up in your own routine, rather than buying on the darkest tint available or the most heavily marketed lens colour.
- If most of your glare is general overbrightness — pale streets, open sky, a beach without much water reflection — the lens category and a confirmed UV400 filter matter more than polarisation. Lens category numbers 0 to 4 describe how much visible light a lens lets through, and matching that to typical conditions is a more useful starting point than tint colour alone.
- If most of your glare is reflected — driving, water, wet roads, snow — polarisation is the feature actually built for that, provided it’s paired with a genuine UV filter rather than substituted for one.

None of this is about spending more. A frame can look considered and cost very little, and an expensive pair can still skip the UV filter that actually matters. The lens doing the protecting and the lens doing the flattering aren’t always the same decision, but with sunglasses, for once, they’re meant to be solved together.
