That said, “titanium” on a spec sheet can mean different alloy grades and finishes, and plated or mixed-metal parts elsewhere on the frame can still cause a reaction.

Why does titanium cost more?
It costs more because it’s harder to work with, not because the raw metal itself is especially rare. What can’t titanium do?
Titanium doesn’t come in the depth of colour or pattern that acetate does. Frame colour on titanium is usually achieved through anodising or plating, which produces clean, often metallic or muted tones rather than the layered, semi-translucent colour you get from cutting into a block of acetate.

The frames worth comparing against titanium are usually monel, stainless steel and beta-titanium (sometimes marketed separately, though it’s still a titanium alloy). Each trades off weight, flexibility and cost differently:
- Monel — an older, cheaper alloy, heavier than titanium and more prone to tarnish over years of wear, but easier to shape into ornate designs.
- Stainless steel — durable and reasonably priced, but noticeably heavier than titanium for the same design.
- Beta-titanium — a more flexible titanium alloy often used for temples, prized for springing back into shape rather than staying bent.
None of these is objectively “better” — they’re different tools for different frame designs, and the right one depends on the shape being built and how it will be worn, not on which sounds most premium on a spec sheet.
How can you tell if a frame is genuinely titanium?
Reliable signs include a stamp or engraving inside the temple stating the material and often a purity or alloy code, a magnet test (titanium is non-magnetic, unlike some steel alloys), and a weight that feels distinctly light relative to the frame’s size. None of these is completely foolproof alone, which is why the printed marking matters most.

Is titanium worth it?

For someone who wants bold, deeply coloured or patterned frames, or who changes glasses often enough that longevity matters less, acetate or another plastic is likely to serve better.
